Fasting is a routine practice in poultry production. It is done in broilers 6 to 8 hours before handling, to allow intestinal emptying. It is practiced in laying hens to stimulate molting and in breeders to control their weight. This management practice produces negative effects: weight loss, contamination, and metabolic changes.
